What Happened
On Sunday, September 13, 2026, former United States President Donald Trump publicly called upon Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to halt military strikes targeting Russian diesel infrastructure. Speaking to reporters during a trip to the Republic of Ireland, Trump stated, “Mr. Zelenskyy has to do one thing: he has to stop knocking out diesel fuel in Russia.” He further elaborated that these strikes were responsible for a global fuel shortage, which in turn was driving up prices worldwide, and not the ongoing conflict with Iran. Trump indicated that he had previously discussed the matter with Zelenskyy, suggesting, “There are plenty of other targets. Don’t hit diesel fuel. That’s hurting the world.” This intervention follows a period of intensified Ukrainian long-range drone attacks on Russian oil refineries, which have reportedly reduced Russia’s fuel production and led to petrol shortages within the country, despite Russia being a major oil and gas exporter. The American Automobile Association (AAA) reported that the national average price for diesel in the US reached an all-time high of $6.06 per gallon on Friday, September 11, 2026, a significant increase from $3.71 per gallon a year prior.
What the Evidence Establishes
The evidence establishes that Donald Trump made a direct appeal to Volodymyr Zelenskyy to cease attacks on Russian diesel infrastructure on September 13, 2026, during his visit to Ireland. Both Al Jazeera and Breitbart reported Trump's exact quote: “Mr. Zelensky has to do one thing. He has to stop knocking out diesel fuel in Russia.” Ukrainian forces have indeed been conducting long-range drone strikes against Russian oil and gas facilities for several months, with Kyiv asserting these refineries are legitimate military targets because Russia's oil industry funds and fuels its invasion. These strikes have caused fuel rationing across Russia and have been cited by the International Energy Agency (IEA) in a September 11 report as a factor in global diesel supply disruptions. The IEA noted, “The disruptions to Russia’s refining system and a near-halt to product exports following intensified Ukrainian attacks have compounded these losses.” Concurrently, US diesel prices hit a record $6.06 per gallon on September 11, according to AAA data, up from $3.71 a year ago. Global crude oil prices also crossed the $100-per-barrel mark last week, with Brent crude reaching $109, influenced by both the Ukraine conflict and the US-Israel war on Iran, which began in February and disrupted oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz.
Where the Accounts Conflict
While both Al Jazeera and Breitbart corroborate Donald Trump's statement urging Ukrainian President Zelenskyy to halt strikes on Russian diesel supplies, a primary point of divergence lies in the attribution of the global fuel price increases. Trump explicitly stated that the diesel price surge “isn’t done by the Middle East, this is done by what’s happening with Russia and Ukraine,” directly blaming Ukrainian actions. However, Al Jazeera, referencing the International Energy Agency (IEA), presents a more nuanced view. The IEA's monthly report, published on September 11, indicated that while the Russia-Ukraine conflict and disruptions to Russia’s refining system were influencing diesel supplies, the war between the US and Israel on Iran, launched in February, was also a significant factor. This conflict has hampered efforts to normalize oil flow through the Persian Gulf and the Red Sea, contributing to a global energy crisis and crude oil prices crossing $100 per barrel. Therefore, the conflict is not in the factual reporting of Trump's statement, but in the broader economic analysis of the causes of global fuel price volatility, with Trump offering a singular cause and other analyses pointing to multiple, interconnected geopolitical events.
Context and Stakes
The context for Trump's intervention is multifaceted, involving domestic US politics, global energy markets, and the ongoing geopolitical landscape. With US midterm elections approaching in November, rising fuel prices are a significant concern for American voters, directly impacting transportation costs and consumer goods. Diesel, in particular, is critical for global logistics, powering ships, trains, and trucks, meaning its price directly affects the cost of international trade. Trump's statement positions the blame for these economic pressures squarely on Ukraine's military strategy, potentially appealing to a domestic audience concerned about economic stability. The broader stakes involve the strategic calculus of the Ukraine war, where Kyiv views Russian energy infrastructure as legitimate military targets funding Moscow's invasion. Furthermore, the US-Iran conflict, which began in February, has already disrupted a significant portion of global oil flow through the Strait of Hormuz, adding another layer of volatility to energy markets. Trump's call could be interpreted as an attempt to shift focus from the broader geopolitical factors, including the US's own involvement in the Middle East, to a more localized cause, potentially influencing public opinion and foreign policy discussions.
What to Watch Next
Several key developments warrant close observation in the coming weeks. First, the immediate reaction from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his administration to Trump's public demand will be critical. Kyiv has consistently defended its right to strike Russian energy targets, and any shift in this stance would signal a significant policy change. Second, the response from the current US administration, particularly President Biden, regarding Trump's intervention and its potential impact on US foreign policy towards Ukraine and Russia, will be important. The Biden administration has supported Ukraine's defense efforts, and a public divergence on strategic targets could create diplomatic friction. Third, monitor global diesel and crude oil prices. Continued Ukrainian strikes, coupled with the ongoing US-Iran conflict, could further exacerbate supply issues, leading to sustained or increased price volatility. Conversely, a cessation of strikes or de-escalation in the Middle East could offer some relief. Finally, observe any further diplomatic efforts, such as the reported peace talks involving Russia, Ukraine, and the US, which Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov suggested could restart in October. The core demands of Moscow and Kyiv, particularly regarding territorial concessions, remain mutually exclusive, making any breakthrough challenging.
Bottom Line
Former President Donald Trump has publicly urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to halt strikes on Russian diesel infrastructure, asserting these attacks are the primary cause of rising global fuel prices and are detrimental to the world economy. This demand comes as US diesel prices reached a record high of $6.06 per gallon and global crude oil prices surpassed $100 per barrel, influenced by both the Ukraine conflict and the US-Iran war. Ukraine maintains that Russian energy facilities are legitimate military targets, funding Moscow's four-year invasion. The intervention by Trump introduces a new dynamic into the complex geopolitical landscape, potentially influencing public discourse ahead of US midterm elections and adding pressure on Kyiv's military strategy. The interplay between continued Ukrainian strikes, the US-Iran conflict, and diplomatic efforts will dictate the trajectory of global energy markets and the broader conflict in Eastern Europe. The immediate future will reveal how Zelenskyy responds and whether Trump's call impacts the strategic decisions of the involved parties.
