What Happened
President Donald Trump is reportedly considering authorizing a nuclear strike against Iran's heavily fortified Pickaxe Mountain facility within days, a warning first issued by conservative commentator Tucker Carlson on Sunday, November 1, 2026. The Daily Caller News Foundation claimed independent corroboration of this central allegation through a source familiar with the matter. The potential target, a tunnel complex near Natanz, is where Israeli intelligence reportedly believes Tehran has resumed uranium enrichment. Carlson's claims, detailed in a lengthy X post, suggest that under pressure from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Trump could make a decision by Saturday, November 7, 2026. This development follows months of American threats against Iran's underground nuclear infrastructure and renewed discussions of military action after the midterm elections on Tuesday, October 27, 2026.
The alleged rationale for a nuclear option stems from the facility's estimated depth of at least 100 meters (approximately 328 feet) beneath solid granite, which some sources claim no conventional weapon in the American arsenal can penetrate. Netanyahu is reportedly applying
What the Evidence Establishes
Evidence indicates that Israeli intelligence asserts Iran has resumed uranium enrichment at the Pickaxe Mountain facility near Natanz. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is actively lobbying President Trump for military action, reportedly calling him daily, driven by his inability to form a government after recent elections without direct U.S. intervention. Key U.S. officials, including Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, CENTCOM commander Adm. Brad Cooper, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and CIA Director John Ratcliffe, are alleged to be aligned with Netanyahu's push for renewed combat operations against Iran. Conversely, Vice President JD Vance and presidential envoy Steve Witkoff are reportedly advising President Trump to pursue a negotiated settlement with Tehran.
President Trump's public statements on the matter have been contradictory; he stated on October 15, 2026, during a NewsMax interview with Rob Finnerty, that he "wouldn't use nuclear" weapons, but in the same interview, he threatened, "We may have to go there. We'll take a shot at that one," regarding Pickaxe Mountain. Technical assessments regarding the effectiveness of a nuclear strike are divided. The Institute for Science and International Security notes the facility's precise depth and layout remain uncertain. While X account Policy Tensor claims "Pickaxe is invulnerable" due to the B61-11 earth-penetrator's limited depth, the National Academies and a Congressional Research Service report suggest underground nuclear detonations can generate shock waves capable of damaging deeper targets, though exceptionally hardened sites may resist. An October CSIS analysis also raised questions about whether the site is currently capable of enrichment operations, based on satellite imagery.
The international community views a U.S. nuclear first-use with alarm. Jeff Knopf, a professor at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies, stated that such an action would "break a more-than-eighty-year tradition of not using nuclear weapons" and set a precedent. Carlson claimed Russia has already informed other governments that an American nuclear strike on Iran would justify Russian nuclear attacks against Ukraine. Philipp Bleek of the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies warned it could "usher in an era where others perceived lesser restraints on nuclear weapons use." Economically, Gulf economies are described as "teetering," and global energy and fertilizer markets are stressed, partly due to 11 supertankers being damaged in the Strait of Hormuz in October alone, with a nuclear strike projected to "radically accelerate the destruction." The UAE reportedly refused Netanyahu's September 27, 2026, lobbying effort for an attack on Iran.
Where the Accounts Conflict
Significant discrepancies exist regarding the imminence and feasibility of a U.S. nuclear strike on Iran. Tucker Carlson and Alex Jones's Telegram feeds present the strike as a highly probable, even imminent, event, with Jones claiming President Trump is "preparing to launch a NUCLEAR SNEAK ATTACK." This contrasts with President Trump's own statement on October 15, 2026, where he explicitly said, "I wouldn't use nuclear," despite also threatening action against Pickaxe Mountain. Gary Samore, a politics professor at Brandeis University, believes it is "extremely unlikely that Trump will order a nuclear strike on Iran," even while acknowledging an earth-penetrating nuclear warhead could destroy the site.
The technical effectiveness of a nuclear strike on Pickaxe Mountain is also a point of contention. The X account Policy Tensor asserts that "Pickaxe is invulnerable" because the B61-11, the only U.S. earth-penetrator, cannot reach the facility's estimated depth of over 100 meters. However, the National Academies and a Congressional Research Service report indicate that underground nuclear detonations can create shock waves capable of damaging targets deeper than the weapon's physical penetration. Furthermore, an October CSIS analysis, based on satellite imagery, suggests the installation may not yet be capable of enrichment operations, directly challenging the premise of an active nuclear threat requiring immediate, extreme action.
Additionally, Alex Jones's Telegram feeds introduced uncorroborated claims of widespread hacking of emergency alert systems in Ukraine and Russia over the weekend, broadcasting messages that a nuclear war had begun. This specific allegation, framed as an attempt to trigger a nuclear conflict between NATO and Russia, is not mentioned or corroborated by the Daily Caller News Foundation's reporting or any other independent source provided. The Daily Caller article focuses solely on the potential U.S. strike on Iran and its broader geopolitical implications, without referencing any such alert system compromise.
Context and Stakes
The potential for a U.S. nuclear strike on Iran's Pickaxe Mountain facility is set against a backdrop of heightened geopolitical tension and significant domestic political pressure on key actors. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's intense lobbying of President Trump is directly linked to his precarious political position following recent midterm elections, where he reportedly failed to secure enough seats to form a government. His need for President Trump to broker a deal to achieve 61 Knesset seats underscores the high personal and political stakes for Netanyahu, who faces potential ignominy, investigations, and even jail if he loses power. This situation creates a strong incentive for Netanyahu to push for a dramatic foreign policy intervention.
The broader context includes months of American threats against Iran's nuclear infrastructure and a reported loosening of America's nuclear doctrine since February 2026, allegedly making the first use of "battlefield nukes" easier. This shift, if true, lowers the threshold for nuclear engagement and increases the risk of escalation. The global implications of breaking the nuclear non-use taboo, which has held since 1945, are profound. Experts like Jeff Knopf and Philipp Bleek warn that a U.S. first-use could set a dangerous precedent, potentially emboldening other nuclear powers like Russia, Pakistan, India, and North Korea to consider similar actions, raising the specter of a global nuclear conflict.
Economically, the region and the world are already under severe strain. Gulf economies are described as "teetering," and global energy and fertilizer markets are stressed, partly due to significant disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, where 11 supertankers were damaged in October. A nuclear strike would "radically accelerate the destruction," potentially contaminating the Persian Gulf and poisoning the water supply for 100 million people, leading to an imminent global depression. The refusal of the UAE to join Netanyahu's lobbying efforts on September 27, 2026, highlights the regional apprehension about further conflict. The internal divisions within the Trump administration, with Vice President JD Vance and envoy Steve Witkoff advocating for a diplomatic solution against the more hawkish stance of other cabinet members, further complicate the decision-making process, emphasizing the deep divisions and high stakes involved.
What to Watch Next
The immediate focus will be on President Trump's decision regarding a potential nuclear strike on Iran, which Tucker Carlson claims could occur by Saturday, November 7, 2026. Any official statements or leaks from the White House or Pentagon concerning this timeline will be critical. Observers will monitor the diplomatic efforts of Vice President JD Vance and presidential envoy Steve Witkoff, who are reportedly advocating for a negotiated settlement with Iran. Their ability to influence President Trump's final decision will be a key indicator of the administration's direction.
In Israel, the political maneuvering of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will remain under scrutiny. His success or failure in forming a government after the recent midterm elections, potentially requiring direct intervention from President Trump, will directly impact his continued pressure for military action against Iran. Any developments in Israeli coalition talks or public statements from Netanyahu will provide further insight into the regional dynamics influencing the U.S. decision.
Further intelligence assessments regarding the Pickaxe Mountain facility's current operational status and technical vulnerability will also be important. Specifically, any updated reports from organizations like the Institute for Science and International Security or CSIS that corroborate or contradict the claims of active enrichment or invulnerability will shape the technical debate. Finally, international reactions, particularly from Russia, China, and other nuclear powers, to the alleged loosening of U.S. nuclear doctrine and the prospect of a first-use strike will be closely watched for signs of diplomatic pressure or shifts in global security postures.
Bottom Line
President Trump faces a critical decision regarding a potential nuclear strike on Iran's Pickaxe Mountain facility, a choice reportedly influenced by intense lobbying from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and internal divisions within his administration. While some U.S. officials and Netanyahu advocate for military action, Vice President Vance and envoy Witkoff are pushing for a diplomatic resolution. The technical feasibility of destroying the deeply buried facility with nuclear weapons remains a subject of expert debate, with some analysts questioning its invulnerability and others suggesting the site may not even be actively enriching uranium.
The stakes extend far beyond the immediate region, with international experts warning that a U.S. first-use of nuclear weapons would shatter an 80-year taboo, potentially triggering a cascade of nuclear proliferation and global conflict. The already fragile global economy, strained by regional instability and disruptions in critical shipping lanes, faces accelerated destruction from any further escalation. President Trump's decision, expected by November 7, will have profound and potentially irreversible geopolitical, economic, and humanitarian consequences, underscoring the urgent need for a clear, evidence-based assessment of all available options and their ramifications.
