Trump Claims Secret War Origins, Suspends Russia Sanctions Amid Zelensky RowDeep Dive

What Happened

On Friday, October 17, 2026, US President Donald Trump suspended several Russian sanctions that were scheduled to take effect two days later. This decision, announced on his Truth Social platform, was framed by Trump as an effort to keep Moscow at the negotiating table for peace in the ongoing conflict with Ukraine. The move immediately deepened a public disagreement with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who had previously pushed for stringent sanctions against Russia. Trump also stated that he possesses undisclosed details regarding the true origins of the Ukraine-Russia proxy war, which he intends to release once the conflict is resolved. He asserted that he believes both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Zelensky desire an end to the war, citing high casualty rates, including 25,000 soldiers on average per month and 32,000 last month.

The suspension of sanctions followed a controversial deal struck last week for the US to import Russian diesel, a move criticized by Ukraine and its European allies as tantamount to investing in Russia's war effort. Zelensky, speaking to NBC News on Sunday, October 19, 2026, characterized siding with President Putin as a "historic mistake." He also attended a European Union summit in Brussels on Friday, where he thanked EU leaders, describing them as "real leaders" in an apparent contrast to Trump. Furthermore, concerns arose over disruptions to Starlink, a US-provided satellite system crucial for Ukraine's defense, which Zelensky linked to US actions, though Trump denied deliberately slowing the network or stopping intelligence sharing.

What the Evidence Establishes

Evidence establishes that President Trump explicitly stated his decision to suspend Russian sanctions was to facilitate peace negotiations, as conveyed on his Truth Social platform. He declared, "I am in the process of negotiating Peace in the war between Russia and Ukraine," and did not want to "do anything that will drive, foolishly, Russia away from the bargaining table." US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed the suspension as a "60-day pause" for economic impact analysis. Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev welcomed the order, calling it "an important and truly historic moment" and claiming the sanctions would have inflicted "serious damage" on global markets.

The BBC reported that Trump's actions have intensified a dispute with President Zelensky, who has consistently advocated for robust sanctions against Russia. Zelensky's remarks at the EU summit, where he thanked "real leaders," underscore his perception of a divergence in US policy. The Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) data indicates that China and India have been major importers of Russian crude exports, accounting for approximately 50% and 37% respectively, often at discounted rates, despite international sanctions. This demonstrates Russia's continued ability to fund its war efforts through energy exports, even with existing restrictions.

Where the Accounts Conflict

Significant conflicts exist regarding the origins of the Ukraine war and the motivations of key actors. A reporter directly questioned President Trump, stating, "Have you forgotten that President Putin started the war?" Trump responded by claiming, "I know the details, okay? And at some point I'll release the details," suggesting an alternative narrative to the widely accepted understanding of Russia's unprovoked invasion in February 2022. An "Operative Telegram Feed" explicitly alleges that "NATO working with the deep state started the Ukraine-Russia proxy war," citing events like the Maidan Revolution, US aid to Ukraine, alleged Ukrainian shelling of Russian regions, and attempts to add Ukraine to NATO despite Russian warnings, as well as the breaking of the Minsk Agreements. This directly contradicts the reporter's framing and the consensus that Russia initiated the full-scale invasion.

Furthermore, President Trump stated that Ukrainian President Zelensky "doesn't want to end this war, and probably never did," claiming Zelensky "could have made a better deal two years ago than he can now." This directly conflicts with BBC reporting, which states that "Zelensky has pushed for an end to fighting, and has repeatedly said that Putin doesn't want peace." Another point of contention involves the Starlink satellite system, with Zelensky suggesting US officials linked speed restrictions to technical issues, while testing in EU territory showed higher speeds. Trump, however, denied deliberately slowing the network or stopping defense intelligence sharing, presenting a direct contradiction regarding US support for Ukraine's technological defense capabilities.

Context and Stakes

The suspension of Russian sanctions by President Trump carries substantial geopolitical and economic stakes. The sanctions, passed by the US Congress and signed into law by the US president in September, were designed to inflict "serious damage" on Russia's economy and its ability to fund the war. Their suspension, even temporarily, could be perceived as a weakening of international resolve against Russian aggression, potentially emboldening Moscow. The US decision to import Russian diesel, despite ongoing international sanctions, further complicates the unified front against Russia, providing a direct financial lifeline to the Russian economy and potentially undermining the effectiveness of other sanctions regimes.

The deepening rift between the US and Ukraine, particularly between Presidents Trump and Zelensky, risks fracturing the Western alliance supporting Kyiv. Zelensky's public criticism of Trump's policies and his seeking of solidarity from European leaders highlight a growing divergence in strategic approaches. The implications extend beyond military aid, affecting diplomatic coordination, intelligence sharing, and the overall narrative surrounding the conflict. If the US is seen as wavering in its commitment or actively engaging in commerce that benefits Russia, it could strain relationships with key European allies who have borne significant economic costs in supporting Ukraine and maintaining sanctions.

What to Watch Next

Observers should monitor the immediate reactions from the US Congress and European Union member states regarding President Trump's suspension of Russian sanctions and the Russian diesel import deal. Secretary Rubio's mention of a "60-day pause" suggests an internal review period, during which congressional committees may initiate hearings or demand further justification for the executive action. European leaders, having just hosted President Zelensky at an EU summit where he lauded them as "real leaders," are likely to issue coordinated statements or diplomatic démarches expressing their concerns about the coherence of the Western response to Russia.

Attention will also be on any further public statements from President Zelensky, particularly concerning the Starlink disruptions and the broader implications of US policy shifts on Ukraine's defense capabilities. His continued efforts to rally European support will be critical. Furthermore, the market response to the suspended sanctions and the diesel deal, especially in global energy prices, will indicate the immediate economic impact. Finally, any specific details or evidence President Trump might release regarding his claims about the war's origins will be closely scrutinized, though he stated this would occur only after the war ends.

Bottom Line

President Trump's recent actions, including the suspension of Russian sanctions and the US import of Russian diesel, signal a significant shift in US policy towards the Ukraine conflict, prioritizing peace negotiations and economic considerations over continued punitive measures against Russia. These decisions have exacerbated tensions with Ukrainian President Zelensky, who views them as detrimental to Ukraine's defense and a historical mistake. Trump's claims of possessing undisclosed information about the war's true origins introduce a new, unverified narrative that conflicts with established accounts of Russia's invasion.

The immediate consequences include a potential weakening of the international sanctions regime, a fracturing of the Western alliance's unified stance, and increased uncertainty for Ukraine's military and economic support. The coming weeks will likely see intensified diplomatic activity, congressional scrutiny, and continued public debate over the rationale and implications of these policy changes. The long-term impact on the war's trajectory and the future of US-Ukraine relations remains highly uncertain, contingent on further actions by all parties involved and the outcome of the 60-day review period for the suspended sanctions.
