What Happened
On October 7, 2026, Israel marked the three-year anniversary of the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks with over 400 events nationwide. Commemorations commenced with a national moment of silence at 6:29 p.m. local time, precisely when Hamas militants initiated their assault, killing over 1,200 people and abducting 251, as reported by Ynet News. The day's activities included protests demanding government accountability, survivor testimonies, and memorial ceremonies, many facilitated by the October Council and the Kumu Movement, civil society organizations representing bereaved families and survivors. Significant gatherings occurred at the Nova Music Festival site in Re’im Forest, where more than 340 individuals were killed and 44 abducted. Protests advocating for a state commission inquiry into the massacre were observed in Caesarea and Jerusalem. Concurrently, anti-Israel groups mobilized across the United States, staging demonstrations in cities like New York and Los Angeles. These rallies, some organized by the Singham network, featured participants waving Palestinian flags and chanting slogans such as "long live the intifada," with some celebrating the "al-Aqsa Flood" operation, Hamas's military code name for the October 7, 2023, attack.
What the Evidence Establishes
The evidence establishes that on October 7, 2023, Hamas-led terrorists killed approximately 1,200 people and kidnapped over 250 from southern Israel. Three years later, on October 7, 2026, Israel observed this anniversary with widespread memorials and protests. The October Council and Kumu Movement, civil society organizations, organized events at more than 400 sites, including the Nova Music Festival grounds. These groups consistently demand a state commission inquiry into the October 7 events, a request Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has not yet acted upon. Netanyahu stated that "4,000 of the 6,000" militants involved in the attack have been killed, vowing to "reach all of them." In the United States, anti-Israel demonstrations occurred on the same anniversary, with groups like NYU Students for Justice in Palestine and The Columbia Intifada staging walkouts and rallies. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani acknowledged the loss from October 7, 2023, but also criticized Israel for an "ongoing genocide in Gaza," claiming over 74,000 Palestinians, including 21,000 children, have been killed. A Fox News Digital investigation revealed that Singham, an American living in Shanghai, has funneled $278 million into a network of nonprofits since 2017, including The People's Forum and CodePink, which organize anti-Israel protests. The Southern District of New York initiated a grand jury probe into Singham's finances in June 2026.
Where the Accounts Conflict
The primary conflict in accounts centers on the interpretation and framing of the October 7 anniversary. In Israel, the day is framed as a period of national mourning, remembrance, and a demand for governmental accountability regarding the 2023 attacks. Einav Zangauker, mother of a freed hostage, articulated this sentiment in an X post, stating, "The state wasn’t there. Not that morning, nor during the 738 days he was abandoned in captivity," emphasizing that "[Oct. 7] is not just the story of us, the families. It is the story of all of us." This perspective highlights the trauma and the perceived failure of the state. Conversely, in the United States, some groups, such as Students for Justice in Palestine at UC Davis, celebrated the anniversary, referring to October 7 as the "anniversary of the al-Aqsa Flood" and calling for "glory to the resistance." New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani's statement further exemplifies this divergence, where he grieved for Israeli victims but simultaneously condemned Israel for an "ongoing genocide in Gaza," citing high Palestinian casualty figures. Trauma psychologist Dr. Orli Peter characterized these US demonstrations as an attempt to "manipulate the public" and "weaponize the anniversary," arguing they detract from Jewish mourning and assert power over the bereaved. These contrasting narratives underscore a deep ideological chasm regarding the conflict's origins, ongoing events, and appropriate responses.
Context and Stakes
The third anniversary of the October 7 attacks unfolds against a backdrop of significant internal and external pressures for Israel. Domestically, the country faces an economic downturn, with citizens reportedly bearing the financial burden of the government's "bellicose policies." Israeli elections are less than a month away, intensifying calls for accountability from civil society organizations like the October Council and Kumu Movement, which are demanding a state commission inquiry into the 2023 massacre. Prime Minister Netanyahu's assertion that "4,000 of the 6,000" militants have been killed, coupled with his vow to "reach all of them," signals a continued military posture. A reported CIA file warning of Israel being "at the brink of civil war" further underscores the internal fragility. Internationally, the coordinated anti-Israel protests in the US, some backed by the Singham network, highlight persistent and well-funded opposition to Israeli policies. The involvement of Mayor Mamdani in these discussions, alongside his meeting with "Palestinian New Yorkers" after an Israeli vigil, illustrates the politicization of the conflict within American municipal governance. The ongoing grand jury probe into Singham's finances by the Southern District of New York indicates potential legal ramifications for the funding of these protest networks, elevating the stakes beyond mere demonstration to national security concerns, as suggested by an "intel expert" cited by Fox News Digital.
What to Watch Next
Several key developments warrant close observation in the immediate future. The upcoming Israeli elections, scheduled for less than a month after the anniversary, will be a critical indicator of public sentiment regarding the current government's handling of security and economic issues. The pressure from the October Council and Kumu Movement for a state commission inquiry into the October 7, 2023, attacks will likely intensify, and any decision by Prime Minister Netanyahu to initiate or further delay such an inquiry will be closely scrutinized. His public statements regarding the continued pursuit of Hamas militants suggest ongoing military operations are probable. In the United States, the grand jury probe by the Southern District of New York into the finances of Singham, who has funneled significant funds to anti-Israel groups, could lead to charges or further revelations regarding the funding infrastructure of these protest movements. This investigation's outcome may impact the organizational capacity and public perception of groups like The People's Forum and CodePink. Furthermore, the scheduled protest by The People's Forum and Shut it Down 4 Palestine in Washington Square Park on the Saturday following the anniversary will demonstrate the sustained mobilization efforts of these organizations and potentially elicit counter-protests or increased law enforcement presence, similar to the NYPD de-escalation observed in New York City.
Bottom Line
The third anniversary of the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks saw a stark divergence in global responses: solemn memorials and demands for government accountability within Israel, contrasted with organized anti-Israel protests in the United States. Israeli civil society groups are pressing for an official inquiry into the 2023 massacre, while Prime Minister Netanyahu maintains a firm stance on eliminating remaining militants. The domestic Israeli context is further complicated by an impending election and economic strain. In the US, demonstrations by anti-Israel organizations, some reportedly funded by a network linked to Singham, celebrated the "al-Aqsa Flood" and condemned Israeli actions in Gaza. A federal grand jury is investigating Singham's financial activities, indicating potential legal consequences for the funding of these protest networks. This period highlights deep divisions in narrative and ongoing geopolitical tensions, with significant implications for Israeli domestic politics, international relations, and the future of protest movements in the US.
