What Happened
On Friday, October 23, 2026, Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, publicly addressed allegations of child sexual abuse material possession against her 82-year-old father, Thomas Markle Sr. Markle stated she was "deeply distressed" by the news, which had recently circulated in tabloids. Her statement followed reports, notably by The Sun on October 22, that her half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr., claimed to have discovered "hundreds, if not thousands" of explicit images involving children among their father’s belongings. Thomas Markle Jr. reportedly found these materials in four large storage bins left by his father in the Philippines when Thomas Markle Sr. moved back to the U.S. Thomas Markle Sr. has vehemently denied these allegations, asserting he never downloaded such content and would welcome an expert examination of his computers.
Meghan Markle further disclosed that she had received a letter in 2018 containing "troubling and disturbing allegations" against her father. This letter was reportedly sent to the Metropolitan Police and Royalty and Specialist Protection, and subsequently shared with her. She indicated that she was given assurances at the time that these allegations were being investigated. As a direct consequence of this information, Markle stated she had restricted her father from having contact with her children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, to protect them. She expressed hope that her decision to maintain distance from her father would now be understood in light of these long-standing concerns, despite prior media portrayals.
What the Evidence Establishes
The available evidence establishes that Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, issued a public statement on October 23, 2026, acknowledging her awareness of serious allegations against her father, Thomas Markle Sr. She explicitly stated that she received a letter in 2018 detailing "troubling and disturbing allegations" concerning him. This letter was reportedly forwarded to the Metropolitan Police and Royalty and Specialist Protection, indicating an official notification of the claims. Markle's statement confirms that her decision to limit her father's access to her children was a direct result of these allegations, made years prior to their public disclosure. She explicitly stated her intent was "to protect them."
Furthermore, the evidence establishes that Thomas Markle Jr., Meghan's half-brother, has made specific claims regarding the discovery of child sexual abuse material. He reportedly found these materials, described as "hundreds, if not thousands" of explicit images and a video, within his father's belongings in the Philippines. Thomas Jr. claims he reported these findings to the police. Conversely, Thomas Markle Sr. has issued a clear denial, stating, "Never. Never. Never. I have never done that." He also offered to allow an expert to examine his computers, challenging the veracity of his son's claims and suggesting they are financially motivated. The existence of conflicting accounts from family members regarding the alleged material and its provenance is clearly established.
Where the Accounts Conflict
Significant conflicts exist between the accounts provided by Thomas Markle Sr. and his son, Thomas Markle Jr., regarding the alleged child sexual abuse material. Thomas Markle Jr. claims he discovered "hundreds, if not thousands" of explicit images and a video depicting a young girl in a sex act on a computer among his father's possessions in the Philippines. He asserts these items were found in four large storage bins that Thomas Markle Sr. left behind when he moved back to the U.S. Thomas Jr. states he reported these findings to the police, implying direct evidence of the material's existence and his father's possession.
In direct contradiction, Thomas Markle Sr. has vehemently denied all allegations. He stated to the Daily Mail, "Never. Never. Never. I have never done that," when asked if he downloaded child pornography. He further challenged his son's narrative by claiming he had not possessed the computers in question since January 2025, when he left Rosarito, Mexico, with his son to move to the Philippines. Thomas Sr. asserted that "Those computers were boxed up in Mexico and put on a cargo ship which took months to get to the Philippines." He also accused his son of fabricating the allegations "for money," directly impugning Thomas Jr.'s motives and the credibility of his claims. The core conflict lies in whether such material exists, whether Thomas Markle Sr. possessed it, and the timeline of computer ownership.
Context and Stakes
The allegations against Thomas Markle Sr. emerge against a backdrop of a long-strained and highly publicized relationship between Meghan Markle and her father. Since her marriage to Prince Harry in 2018, the relationship has been characterized by public disputes, media interviews, and a lack of direct contact. This new development adds a severe legal and moral dimension to their existing familial estrangement, potentially reshaping public perception of the family dynamics. The involvement of the Metropolitan Police and Royalty and Specialist Protection in 2018, as stated by Meghan Markle, indicates that these concerns were not merely private family matters but had reached official channels years ago, elevating the seriousness of the current public disclosure.
The stakes are considerable, both for the individuals involved and for the broader public narrative surrounding the British Royal Family. For Thomas Markle Sr., the allegations carry the potential for severe legal consequences and irreparable damage to his reputation. For Meghan Markle, the public revelation of her long-standing awareness and protective actions regarding her children could alter the narrative around her relationship with her father, which has often been portrayed negatively by certain media outlets. The ongoing police investigation, if confirmed and pursued, could lead to criminal charges, further intensifying media scrutiny and potentially impacting the public image of the Duchess of Sussex and, by extension, the Royal Family, despite their distance from Thomas Markle Sr.'s personal affairs.
What to Watch Next
The immediate focus will be on any official statements or actions from law enforcement agencies regarding the alleged investigation into Thomas Markle Sr. While Meghan Markle mentioned a 2018 notification to the Metropolitan Police and Royalty and Specialist Protection, the current status of any active investigation remains unclear from the provided sources. Observers should monitor for confirmation from British or Philippine authorities regarding the existence and scope of any ongoing inquiry into Thomas Markle Sr.'s alleged possession of child sexual abuse material. Any formal charges or arrests would represent a significant escalation of the situation.
Additionally, the public response from Thomas Markle Sr. will be critical. He has offered to allow an expert to examine his computers, and whether he follows through on this offer could significantly impact the credibility of his denials. Media outlets will likely press for details on this proposed examination and its findings. Further statements from Thomas Markle Jr., who initiated the recent public claims, could also provide additional details or evidence. The legal teams representing Meghan Markle and Thomas Markle Sr. may also issue statements or take actions to manage the public narrative, particularly given the high defamation risk associated with such serious allegations. The long-term implications for the Markle family's public image and their relationship with the British Royal Family will also be closely watched.
Bottom Line
Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, has publicly confirmed her awareness since 2018 of "troubling and disturbing allegations" of child sexual abuse material possession against her father, Thomas Markle Sr. This prior knowledge led her to restrict his contact with her children, a decision she now hopes will be understood in light of the recent public disclosures. The allegations themselves were brought to light by her half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr., who claims to have found extensive explicit material on his father's computers in the Philippines and reported it to the police.
Thomas Markle Sr. has vehemently denied all accusations, asserting he never downloaded such content and offering his computers for expert examination. He has also accused his son of making these claims for financial gain. The situation presents a stark conflict between family members, with serious legal implications for Thomas Markle Sr. and significant reputational stakes for Meghan Markle and the extended Royal Family. The veracity of the allegations and the outcome of any potential police investigation remain unresolved, with further developments expected as authorities potentially confirm their involvement and the family members continue to navigate the public scrutiny.
