What Happened
Texas Attorney General and Republican Senate nominee Ken Paxton admitted in leaked audio from a September 30 meeting that the ongoing war in Iran is a significant drag on his reelection efforts. Speaking to an audience of donors and lobbyists, Paxton identified high fuel costs—specifically noting diesel exceeding $6.00 per gallon—as his campaign's most substantial obstacle heading into the November election. This private assessment follows his previous public endorsements of President Donald Trump's military actions in the region. The leaked recording characterizes the economic fallout from the conflict as a more pressing political issue than trade tariffs for the Texas electorate.
What the Evidence Establishes
The leaked audio confirms Paxton told contributors that 'it’s the war, it’s gas prices' and 'diesel is over $6 a gallon,' explicitly stating these factors represent his 'biggest problem.' Economic data corroborates the rising cost of energy; according to AAA, regular gas averaged $4.36 as of October 7, 2026, while diesel reached $6.30. This marks a massive increase from the October 2025 diesel average of $3.68. The inflationary pressure extends to food, with grocery costs rising 3.4% on average since January 2025 due to these fuel increases. Furthermore, polling data from PBS News/NPR/Marist shows a significant deficit for the Republican ticket, with 53% of voters favoring Democrats over Republicans in a hypothetical current election.
Where the Accounts Conflict
A direct contradiction exists between Paxton’s private campaign strategy and his public foreign policy stance. In March, Paxton told Fox News that President Trump 'did the right thing' regarding Operation Epic Fury, arguing that military intervention was necessary to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. While he publicly framed the intervention as a security necessity, the leaked audio reveals he views the resulting economic instability as a primary threat to his political survival. His spokesperson, Madison Cercy, attempted to reconcile these positions by framing his focus on tax cuts—including healthcare and housing write-offs—as a pragmatic response to the economic 'pinch' felt by Texans, rather than an admission of political vulnerability.
Context and Stakes
The Texas Senate race is currently classified as a 'toss up' by the Cook Political Report. Paxton is trailing Democratic candidate James Talarico by an average of 3.1 points according to RealClear Polling. The stakes for the Republican Party are high, with expectations to spend between $150 million and $200 million to secure the seat. The Senate Leadership Fund super PAC has already allocated over $100 million for television advertisements in Texas. The political environment is further complicated by low approval ratings for the current administration’s handling of the economy, with only 17% of U.S. adults approving of President Trump’s management of the cost of living, according to the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.
What to Watch Next
Observers should monitor the immediate fallout from the leaked audio during the San Antonio rally involving President Trump and Paxton on October 7, 2026. The campaign's ability to pivot toward the proposed tax cut plan—specifically the expansion of the child tax credit—will be tested against the persistent reality of 44% to 50% increases in gas prices since the conflict began in February. Additionally, the strategic spending of the $100 million television reserve by the Senate Leadership Fund will indicate whether Republicans believe the economic narrative can be neutralized by localized fiscal promises. Any shift in Talarico's positioning on social issues or the GOP's response to the 'numbers drop' mentioned by Paxton will be critical in the final weeks.
Bottom Line
Ken Paxton is caught between defending a military intervention that fuels high energy costs and attempting to distance himself from the economic consequences of that same intervention to win over voters. The leaked audio exposes a campaign struggling to reconcile the ideological requirements of the Republican base with the immediate material concerns of the Texas electorate. With diesel prices nearly 70% higher than a year ago and a significant polling deficit, the Republican strategy relies heavily on massive capital injections and a rapid shift toward domestic tax relief to offset the geopolitical instability caused by the Iran war.
