What Happened
On October 8, 2026, the Pentagon confirmed that the execution of former Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan will be livestreamed for public viewing. The confirmation came after Secretary of War Pete Hegseth told commentator Jack Posobiec that the execution would be made public, as reported by an Operative Telegram Feed and TMZ. Hasan is scheduled to die by firing squad on December 3, 2026, at Fort Hood, Texas, the same base where he carried out the 2009 shooting.
In the 2009 attack, Hasan killed 13 people and wounded 32 others while shouting “Allahu Akbar” before opening fire inside the Soldier Readiness Processing Center. The Department of Defense has not carried out a military execution since 1961, when Army Private John Bennett was hanged at Fort Leavenworth. President Donald Trump’s decision to reinstate the firing‑squad penalty for Hasan triggered the current proceedings.
What the Evidence Establishes
The Pentagon’s statement, corroborated by the Operative Telegram Feed and TMZ, establishes that Hasan’s execution will be conducted by firing squad and livestreamed. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth’s comment to Jack Posobiec that the execution would be public is directly quoted in both sources. The Associated Press, cited in the Telegram feed, also reports the livestream plan.
Additional evidence from TMZ includes historical context: the last U.S. public execution occurred over 90 years ago, the last military firing‑squad execution was Pvt. Eddie Slovik in 1945, and the military has not executed anyone since Army Pvt. John Bennett’s hanging in 1961. TMZ also notes that President Trump’s decision to reinstate the firing‑squad penalty followed a botched lethal injection attempt on Tennessee inmate Christa Pike.
Where the Accounts Conflict
The two sources agree on the core facts: Hasan’s execution date, method, location, and the Pentagon’s confirmation of a livestream. Both cite Secretary of War Pete Hegseth’s statement that the execution will be public, though the phrasing differs slightly.
Minor discrepancies appear in descriptive details. TMZ states Hasan wounded “more than 30 others” in the 2009 attack, while the Telegram feed cites the specific figure of 32 wounded from the Associated Press. TMZ also provides extra historical background—such as the 1961 Bennett hanging and the 1945 Slovik execution—that the Telegram feed does not mention, and it links the timing to Tennessee’s recent Christa Pike lethal‑injection incident, which the Telegram feed omits.
Context and Stakes
The upcoming execution sits at the intersection of death‑penalty policy, military justice, and media practices. If carried out as planned, it will be the first U.S. public execution since the 1930s, breaking a nine‑decade moratorium on open state‑sanctioned killings. The firing‑squad method revives a form of execution last used by the U.S. military in World War II.
Politically, the move aligns with President Trump’s broader advocacy for reinstating capital punishment for terrorism‑related crimes. Legally, defense attorneys may challenge the livestream as a violation of Eighth‑Amendment protections against cruel and unusual punishment or argue that public broadcasting exacerbates the punitive nature of the sentence. Veterans’ groups and civil‑rights organizations have already signaled intent to monitor the proceeding for potential constitutional concerns.
What to Watch Next
Within the next few days, observers should watch for any filings in federal court seeking an injunction to halt the livestream or the execution itself. Hasan’s legal team has previously raised claims about mental competence and the propriety of the death penalty, which could be revived in light of the public‑broadcast element.
Public reaction will also be closely tracked. Protests are possible both outside Fort Hood and online, particularly from groups opposed to the death penalty or concerned about the spectacle of a state‑streamed killing. Social‑media sentiment polls released within a week may indicate whether the livestream garners support or backlash.
Congressional oversight could emerge if members of the House or Senate Judiciary Committees request briefings from the Department of Defense on the legal basis for a public firing‑squad execution and its implications for military justice policy.
Bottom Line
The Pentagon’s confirmation sets a historic precedent: a terrorism‑related death sentence will be carried out by firing squad and broadcast live on December 3, 2026, ending a roughly 90‑year gap in U.S. public executions. The event merges long‑dormant execution practices with modern media distribution, creating a novel test case for constitutional and policy limits.
Stakeholders—including the Department of Defense, the White House, the judiciary, and advocacy groups—will scrutinize the proceeding for legal compliance, public safety, and broader implications for how the state administers and displays capital punishment. Whether the livestream proceeds without interruption or faces judicial intervention will shape the immediate aftermath and may influence future debates over the death penalty’s visibility.
