What Happened
Earlier in September 2026, Ansar Allah, commonly known as the Houthis, launched a rapid offensive, seizing approximately 2,000 square kilometers of territory in Yemen. This territorial gain included significant portions of Yemen’s Red Sea coast, the strategic port city of Mokha, and Perim Island, which is critically positioned within the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Concurrently, Houthi forces executed a drone attack that successfully shut down a major Saudi oil pipeline, the East-West Pipeline. This series of events occurred despite prior warnings from analysts regarding the Houthis' capability to escalate and widen the conflict by targeting strategic islands and chokepoints. Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman of Saudi Arabia reportedly contacted President Trump on September 10, requesting U.S. military strikes against the rebel group, a request that Trump declined, citing the administration's current non-intervention stance.
The Houthi blitz, described by a senior Yemeni source to CNN as involving “waves upon waves of fighters … along with their available ballistic missiles and weapons,” overwhelmed local defenses. The same source indicated that Yemeni forces had been assured of United States Central Command (CENTCOM) monitoring and impending Saudi air support, which ultimately “never came.” This lack of air support contributed directly to the fall of Mokha. Admiral Bradley Cooper, head of CENTCOM, had visited Saudi Arabia prior to these attacks, yet direct U.S. military intervention was withheld, with the U.S. instead providing intelligence, targeting data, and deploying approximately 200 military advisers to the kingdom.
What the Evidence Establishes
The evidence establishes that Houthi forces executed a highly effective and rapid territorial expansion in early September 2026, securing key strategic locations along Yemen's Red Sea coast. The seizure of Mokha and Perim Island directly threatens the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a vital global shipping lane for oil and trade. The drone attack on Saudi Arabia's East-West Pipeline further demonstrates the Houthis' capability to disrupt critical energy infrastructure. These actions underscore a significant failure in regional defense coordination and preparedness, particularly between Saudi Arabia and its allies. A regional source explicitly told CNN that the failure was a “disaster made in [Washington] DC and Riyadh,” attributing blame to a lack of coordinated response rather than solely to Yemeni government deficiencies.
Furthermore, the evidence indicates a clear divergence in U.S. policy regarding direct military intervention in the Yemen conflict. Despite Saudi requests for strikes, the Trump administration opted against direct engagement, a decision consistent with its broader strategy to empower regional partners and pivot U.S. resources towards Asia and the perceived threat from China. This non-intervention, however, has exposed Saudi Arabia's military limitations against the Houthis, even with substantial U.S. defense pacts, investment pledges, and advanced weapons transfers, including F-35s. The incident suggests that Riyadh's expectation of U.S. military bailouts has been challenged, potentially eroding the reliability of America's
Where the Accounts Conflict
The primary source, the Daily Caller, provides a detailed account of the Houthi offensive, including specific dates, locations, and quotes from regional sources, framing the events as a challenge to President Trump's Middle East strategy. It attributes blame for the defensive failures to a lack of coordination between Washington and Riyadh, and to some extent, the haphazard response of the Yemeni government, as noted by Mohammed al-Basha. The Daily Caller's narrative focuses on the strategic implications for global shipping and oil markets, and the perceived weakening of Saudi Arabia's position.
In contrast, the Operative Telegram Feed, attributed to Alex Jones, presents a highly sensationalized and alarmist perspective. It uses phrases like “MAJOR WW3 UPDATE,” “Civilization Is In Danger Of Going Off The Rails!” and “Worst-Case Scenario” Iranian Offensive. While it corroborates the destruction of a major Saudi pipeline and Saudi requests for U.S. help, its framing is significantly more hyperbolic, suggesting an imminent global catastrophe and directly linking the events to a broader
Context and Stakes
The Houthi offensive unfolds within the broader context of the ongoing Iran War and President Trump's second-term foreign policy objectives. Since 2025, Trump formally elevated Saudi Arabia to major non-NATO ally status, facilitating easier weapons transfers and enhanced defense cooperation. The overarching goal of this strategy has been to bolster Saudi Arabia into a dominant regional power, thereby allowing the U.S. to reduce its direct military footprint in the Middle East and reallocate resources towards countering China's influence in Asia. This recent Houthi success, however, directly challenges the efficacy of this strategy, demonstrating that even with significant U.S. support and advanced weaponry, Saudi Arabia struggles to contain the Iran-aligned rebel group.
The stakes are substantial, particularly concerning global energy security and freedom of navigation. The Bab el-Mandeb Strait, now directly threatened by Houthi control of Perim Island and the Yemeni coast, is a critical chokepoint for global oil and trade routes. Any disruption or closure of this strait would have immediate and severe repercussions on global oil and gas prices, impacting economies worldwide. The drone attack on the East-West Pipeline further underscores the vulnerability of Saudi energy infrastructure. For the Trump administration, the situation presents a foreign policy dilemma, as pressure to intervene could mount, especially with upcoming midterm elections, even if American ships are not directly attacked. The perceived failure of Saudi defenses, despite U.S. assurances and aid, could also destabilize regional alliances and perceptions of U.S. security guarantees.
What to Watch Next
Observers should closely monitor Houthi actions regarding the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Any attempt by the Houthis to directly impede or threaten commercial shipping through this vital chokepoint would likely trigger a more forceful international response, potentially compelling the U.S. to reconsider its non-intervention stance. The immediate aftermath of the pipeline attack and territorial gains will reveal the extent of Saudi Arabia's retaliatory capabilities and its ability to regain lost ground without direct U.S. air support. The deployment of 200 U.S. military advisers and continued intelligence sharing indicates a sustained, albeit indirect, U.S. commitment, and any changes to this level of support will be significant.
Furthermore, attention should be paid to diplomatic efforts and statements from Washington and Riyadh. The Trump administration's continued refusal of direct strikes, despite the escalating situation, will be a key indicator of its resolve to maintain its pivot-to-Asia strategy. Any public or private shifts in this policy, particularly if global oil prices surge significantly, would signal a re-evaluation. The internal dynamics within the Yemeni government and its ability to establish a united command and control structure, as highlighted by Mohammed al-Basha, will also influence the conflict's trajectory. The potential for other regional actors to become more involved, either in support of or opposition to the Houthis, remains a critical variable.
Bottom Line
The recent Houthi offensive in Yemen, marked by significant territorial gains along the Red Sea coast and a drone strike on a critical Saudi oil pipeline, represents a substantial challenge to regional stability and global energy security. This escalation has exposed the limitations of the Trump administration's strategy to empower Saudi Arabia as a primary regional security guarantor while the U.S. disengages from direct military intervention in the Middle East. Despite extensive U.S. defense cooperation and intelligence support, Saudi Arabia appears unable to independently counter the Houthi threat, leading to a breakdown in Riyadh's expectations of U.S. military assistance.
The strategic importance of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, now directly threatened by Houthi control of key adjacent territories, elevates the potential for severe disruptions to international shipping and a corresponding surge in global oil prices. The U.S. faces increasing pressure to safeguard freedom of navigation, potentially forcing a re-evaluation of its non-intervention policy, especially as midterm elections approach. The conflict underscores a complex geopolitical landscape where regional actors, empowered by external support, can significantly alter the balance of power and challenge established security frameworks, with far-reaching economic and political consequences.
