What Happened
On Wednesday, September 24, 2026, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian addressed the UN General Assembly in New York, directly responding to US President Donald Trump's recent threat to 'annihilate' the Islamic Republic. Pezeshkian declared that Iran would never 'bend the knee' despite nearly seven months of war with the US and Israel, but affirmed readiness for a diplomatic solution. His address followed Trump's speech on Tuesday, where the US President presented a choice between a negotiated deal or the swift 'annihilation' of Iran. The US delegation walked out of the chamber at the beginning of Pezeshkian's remarks. During his speech, Pezeshkian held up a photo of the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, killed in a US-Israeli strike in February, and presented images of over 175 civilians, including children, reportedly killed in missile strikes on a primary school in Minab and a sports complex in Lamerd. Concurrently, an attack on a cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz killed an Indian sailor, prompting condemnation from India's foreign ministry and calls for unimpeded passage.
What the Evidence Establishes
The evidence establishes a protracted conflict, with the US and Israel launching a joint attack in late February that resulted in the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. This action initiated a period of intense hostilities, including Iran's retaliatory missile and drone attacks on Israel and Gulf Arab states hosting US military bases. A key development was Iran's effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz in February by attacking commercial vessels, a waterway through which a fifth of global oil and gas shipments typically pass. The US responded in April by imposing a blockade on Iranian ports and ships. A preliminary agreement to end the war and reopen the strait was reached in June but collapsed within weeks after Iran resumed shipping attacks and the US reinstated its blockade. Indirect talks between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and US envoy Steve Witkoff, brokered by Qatari mediators, occurred on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, marking the first such discussions since June.
Where the Accounts Conflict
Significant discrepancies exist regarding the civilian casualties claimed by Iran. President Pezeshkian presented pictures of more than 175 civilians, two-thirds of them children, who Iranian authorities state were killed in missile strikes on a primary school in Minab and a sports complex in Lamerd in February. The US, however, has explicitly denied striking Lamerd and stated it is still investigating the incident in Minab. This direct contradiction highlights a critical point of contention in the narrative of the conflict, with Iran framing these events as 'cowardly attacks and aggressions' against its 'innocent people,' while the US maintains a position of denial or ongoing investigation. Furthermore, while Iran insists on retaining some control over the Strait of Hormuz and collecting fees, the US has rejected this demand, indicating a fundamental disagreement on maritime sovereignty and economic access.
Context and Stakes
The ongoing conflict, now in its seventh month, is deeply rooted in long-standing geopolitical tensions and strategic interests. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint for global energy supplies, making its control and accessibility a high-stakes issue for international trade and energy security. Iran's demand for an end to the US blockade and access to the Strait is not merely economic but also a matter of national sovereignty and leverage in negotiations. The nuclear program remains a central point of contention; Trump demanded Iran 'relinquish their nuclear ambitions,' while Pezeshkian reiterated Iran's right to a civilian nuclear program, explicitly denying any intent to develop nuclear weapons. The collapse of the June preliminary agreement underscores the fragility of diplomatic efforts and the deep mistrust between the two nations, with each side accusing the other of violating terms or acting in bad faith. The involvement of Qatari mediators suggests an international recognition of the need for de-escalation, yet the public rhetoric remains confrontational.
What to Watch Next
The immediate focus will be on the continuation and outcome of the indirect talks between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and US envoy Steve Witkoff, facilitated by Qatari mediators. Witkoff expressed hope that these discussions, the first since June, would 'prove constructive and promising,' with mediators continuing their work. However, Iran's foreign ministry spokesman Esmail Baqai downplayed the talks as 'not anything new,' reiterating Iran's firm conditions, including the cessation of the US blockade and the release of frozen Iranian assets. Observers will monitor any statements from Qatari officials or either side regarding the progress or breakdown of these negotiations. The status of the US blockade on Iranian ports and ships, imposed in April, and Iran's actions in the Strait of Hormuz will be critical indicators. Any further attacks on commercial vessels or changes in naval presence in the Gulf region could signal escalation or de-escalation. The international community will also be watching for any new evidence or clarification regarding the civilian casualty claims in Minab and Lamerd.
Bottom Line
The conflict between the US and Iran remains in a precarious stalemate, characterized by high-stakes rhetoric and limited, indirect diplomatic engagement. Iran's President Pezeshkian has firmly rejected US threats while signaling a conditional openness to dialogue, contingent on the lifting of the US blockade on the Strait of Hormuz and the release of frozen assets. The US maintains its pressure, with President Trump issuing stark warnings. The strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz and the unresolved issue of Iran's nuclear program continue to be central flashpoints. While indirect talks have resumed, the deep-seated mistrust and conflicting demands, particularly regarding maritime access and alleged civilian casualties, present significant obstacles to a lasting resolution. The situation is highly volatile, with the potential for rapid escalation or a slow, arduous path towards a fragile diplomatic understanding, heavily influenced by actions in the Gulf and the outcomes of ongoing, albeit cautious, negotiations.
