Iran Warns of US Strike Resumption Amid Trump's 'Deciding Mode' and Hormuz DisruptionsDeep Dive

What Happened

On Sunday, September 21, 2026, Iran's Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, which oversees the nation's armed forces, announced it had received intelligence indicating the United States was preparing to resume military strikes against Iran. This warning immediately raised the prospect of renewed full-scale conflict, following months of reduced direct attacks after a 60-day memorandum expired last month. Concurrently, US President Donald Trump informed Fox News that he was in a 'deciding mode' regarding Iran, outlining options that included further military action, economic pressure, or a diplomatic deal. Trump also stated he would be open to meeting Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York this week. Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi departed Tehran for the UNGA, making a stopover in Qatar, a key mediator in the ongoing tensions. The confrontation has already impacted global energy shipments, with shipping data over the weekend showing only 12 commodity vessels crossing the Strait of Hormuz, a significant decrease from 35 the previous weekend.

What the Evidence Establishes

The evidence establishes a heightened state of alert and mutual threats between the United States and Iran. Iran's central military command explicitly warned that any renewed US assault would trigger retaliation against American bases and interests across the Middle East, further stating that regional countries assisting Washington would be 'considered complicit' and face an Iranian response. President Trump confirmed his consideration of 'very big things' coming, including the possibility of 'wiping Iran out' or allowing it to 'rot economically,' alongside the option of a deal. Both nations are sending high-level officials to the UN General Assembly, with Iran's Foreign Minister Araghchi and President Pezeshkian expected to attend, while Trump is scheduled to meet with Gulf Cooperation Council leaders. Qatari officials, including Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed al-Ansari, are actively mediating, conveying Iran's conditions for renewed talks, which include an end to the war and US attacks, the release of frozen Iranian funds, and the lifting of the US naval blockade on Iranian ports. US Central Command (CENTCOM) chief Adm. Brad Cooper reported that US forces have supported the passage of over one billion barrels of crude oil from Gulf partners through the Strait of Hormuz, while Iran has exported zero barrels under what he termed an 'ironclad blockade,' redirecting 109 commercial vessels for compliance.

Where the Accounts Conflict

A notable conflict in the accounts centers on the alleged 'green light' for US strikes. Iran's Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters claimed to have received information that the decision for another US attack was made at a meeting in Europe with the 'green light' of some regional countries. However, neither US officials nor any independent sources have corroborated this specific assertion regarding a 'green light' from regional partners. The US narrative, as conveyed by President Trump, focuses on his internal 'deciding mode' and the range of options he is personally weighing, rather than a pre-approved plan involving other nations. Another point of divergence concerns the Houthi group. While the State Department issued a warning to Americans about the 'potential for unforeseen escalation' in the Middle East following Houthi ballistic missile and drone attacks against Saudi Arabia, including a missile launched toward Riyadh, President Trump told Trey Yingst of Fox News that Washington remains in 'constant communication' with the Houthis and that the group had 'agreed not to fight the United States.' This presents a direct contradiction regarding the Houthis' current posture and their relationship with the US, particularly in the context of regional stability.

Context and Stakes

The current escalation unfolds within a nearly seven-month conflict that began in late February with joint US-Israeli strikes on Iran. A 60-day memorandum reached in June temporarily reduced full-scale fighting but expired last month, leading to an increase in attacks around the Strait of Hormuz. This waterway is critically important, linking the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea and serving as a vital route for approximately one-fifth of the world's oil supply. Disruptions in this strait have immediate and significant global economic repercussions, particularly for energy markets. The UN General Assembly provides a rare diplomatic window, bringing President Trump and Iranian President Pezeshkian to the same city, offering a potential opportunity for direct talks despite the escalating rhetoric. Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf articulated a dual strategy, advocating for military force to push back opponents before engaging in diplomacy, and reiterated that the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed until Washington met Iran's conditions, including an end to the naval blockade and the release of frozen funds. The stakes involve not only regional stability and the potential for a wider conflict but also global energy security and the future of US-Iran relations.

What to Watch Next

The immediate focus will be on the United Nations General Assembly in New York this week. Observers will closely monitor whether President Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian engage in any direct or indirect diplomatic contact, particularly given Trump's stated openness to a meeting. The outcomes of Trump's discussions with leaders from the six Gulf Cooperation Council states, where Iran is expected to be a prominent topic, will also be critical. Qatari mediation efforts, with officials traveling between capitals and exchanging proposals, represent a key diplomatic track to watch for any breakthroughs in restarting negotiations. Furthermore, President Trump's impending decision on Iran, which he described as being in 'deciding mode,' will dictate the next phase of the confrontation, whether it involves further military action, intensified economic pressure, or a diplomatic overture. The Strait of Hormuz will remain a flashpoint; any further disruption to shipping or changes in US naval operations, as well as Iran's adherence to its threat of closure, will be closely monitored for economic and security implications. Any statements from Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, or other senior Iranian officials will also provide insight into Tehran's evolving strategy.

Bottom Line

The US and Iran are locked in a high-stakes standoff, characterized by escalating military threats and a fragile diplomatic opening at the UN General Assembly. Iran's military has issued a direct warning of impending US strikes, promising 'sustained, effective and painful' retaliation against American interests and regional allies. President Trump, while considering severe military options, has also expressed willingness for direct talks with Iranian President Pezeshkian. The Strait of Hormuz is already experiencing disruptions, underscoring the immediate economic impact of the conflict. Qatari mediation efforts are underway, attempting to bridge the gap between Tehran's conditions for negotiation—including an end to the naval blockade and release of frozen funds—and Washington's demands. The coming days at the UNGA will be crucial in determining whether diplomacy can de-escalate the situation or if the region will face a renewed and potentially expanded military confrontation, with significant implications for global energy markets and geopolitical stability.
