What Happened
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was reelected for a fourth term, narrowly defeating challenger Flávio Bolsonaro in the second round of the election.
Lula's victory was marked by controversy, with Bolsonaro and his allies claiming that the incumbent president used a 'dirty trick' to win by keeping polls open for two extra hours in his electoral stronghold in northeastern Brazil.
Despite the controversy, Lula's win was congratulated by global leaders and Democrats in the US, who praised his commitment to democracy and his criticism of President Trump's policies.
What the Evidence Establishes
The evidence establishes that Lula won the election with a total of 10 million more votes in the second round than he did in the first, despite most of the candidates who dropped out being conservative.
Lula's margin of victory was roughly double what he scored when he defeated Jair Bolsonaro, Flávio's father, in the previous election.
Additionally, Lula's victory speech emphasized his commitment to democracy and his rejection of President Trump's effort to restore the Monroe Doctrine in Latin America.
Where the Accounts Conflict
The accounts of the election outcome conflict between Lula's supporters and Bolsonaro's allies, with the latter claiming that the election was marred by irregularities and that Lula's victory was illegitimate.
Bolsonaro stated that 'there's a lot that needs to be cleared up before Brazil simply accepts this foul play that took place in these elections' and that 'what happened today was not something normal.
However, Lula's supporters argue that the election was fair and that the incumbent president's victory was a result of his popularity and commitment to democracy.
