What Happened
Rep. Haley Stevens, a Democrat from Michigan, endorsed Republican Mike Rogers over Democrat Abdul El-Sayed in the Michigan Senate race on November 1, 2026.
Stevens' endorsement came after she lost the Democratic primary to El-Sayed and had been critical of his approach to Israel and Jewish and Black voters.
The endorsement was seen as a surprise move, as Stevens had been a member of the Democratic Party and had been expected to support the party's nominee.
According to Fox News, Stevens' decision to endorse Rogers was made after she was asked to stay away from El-Sayed's campaign events, and she felt that El-Sayed's rhetoric on Israel had made the Jewish community 'less safe'.
Stevens' fiancé, Jason Turkish, had also broken with the Democratic nominee, saying he would vote for Rogers due to El-Sayed's stance on Israel.
What the Evidence Establishes
The evidence establishes that Rep. Haley Stevens' endorsement of Mike Rogers was a significant move that sparked a major party backlash.
Top Democrats, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, publicly condemned the endorsement, with Schumer calling it a 'despicable betrayal'.

Additionally, there are conflicting reports of the reaction to Stevens' endorsement, with some Democrats calling for her removal from the House Democratic Caucus, while others have defended her right to make her own decisions.
As reported by Breitbart, Rep. Pramila Jayapal, a Democrat from Washington, said that Stevens 'has no place in our party' and should be removed from the caucus.
