What Happened
On Friday, October 2, 2026, Ethiopia announced the closure of its embassy in Asmara and ordered ten Eritrean diplomats to leave the country within 48 hours, citing activities that threatened national security.
Eritrea responded by severing diplomatic ties, describing Ethiopia's decision as astounding and stating it had no option but to reciprocate in kind.
The announcements followed powerful explosions heard overnight in Addis Ababa on Wednesday night, September 30, 2026, near the intelligence service headquarters and military installations.
What the Evidence Establishes
The BBC reports that more than 50 people have been killed since heavy fighting resumed in northern Ethiopia last week, with clashes spreading across Tigray, Afar and Amhara.
An Alamata doctor told the BBC that at least 52 civilians died during three days of intense fighting in his town, while tens of thousands have fled Afar along the vital transport corridor to Djibouti.
Ethiopia's National Intelligence and Security Service imposed an indefinite ban on drone flights over Addis Ababa and surrounding areas shortly before the blasts, aiming to protect senior officials and infrastructure.
Where the Accounts Conflict
Ethiopia accuses Eritrea of supporting an alliance of armed groups, including the Tigray People's Liberation Front and the Fano militia from Amhara, aimed at removing Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's government.
Eritrea's Information Minister Yemane Gebremeskel rejected these accusations, claiming Ethiopia blames neighbours to divert attention from internal problems.
Both sides also disagree on who initiated the latest hostilities, with the government saying Tigrayan fighters attacked after taking control of federal airports, while Tigrayan authorities say they responded to a federal offensive and drone strikes.
Context and Stakes
Eritrea gained independence from Ethiopia in 1993, leaving Ethiopia landlocked and without direct Red Sea access, a issue Abiy Ahmed has repeatedly argued is essential for long-term economic and security interests.
The two countries were allies during the 2020-2022 Tigray war, when Eritrean troops fought alongside Ethiopian federal forces against the TPLF, a conflict an African Union mediator estimated caused about 600,000 deaths.
The United Nations has warned that the deteriorating security situation severely disrupts humanitarian work, with drone activity and air strikes putting civilians, vital infrastructure and aid operations at risk.
What to Watch Next
Observers should monitor whether Ethiopia will expel additional Eritrean diplomats or impose economic sanctions, and whether Eritrea will close its consulate in Dire Dawa or other Ethiopian cities.
Military developments to watch include further advances by federal forces toward Mekelle, potential drone attacks on the capital, and any movement of Eritrean troops across the border.
Humanitarian actors will be watching for UN-led appeals for safe access corridors and any African Union mediation attempts to prevent a broader regional war.
Bottom Line
The abrupt severing of diplomatic relations marks a dangerous reversal from the recent alliance that helped end the Tigray war, raising the prospect of a wider confrontation involving neighboring Sudan and Egypt.
With more than 50 reported casualties, displaced tens of thousands in Afar, and ongoing unverified claims of foreign troop involvement, the situation remains volatile and highly dependent on verification of battlefield reports.
Without credible de-escalation steps, the crisis could exacerbate food insecurity and hinder aid delivery to millions reliant on northern Ethiopia's humanitarian corridors.
