What Happened
Denmark, Greenland, and the United States are scheduled to sign a security agreement concerning Greenland on Tuesday, September 23, 2026, at the UN General Assembly in New York. This deal, which has not yet been publicly disclosed, aims to shift the responsibility for Arctic security from solely Danish or American oversight to a broader NATO involvement. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen stated on Sunday to national broadcaster TV2 that the agreement would largely place the Arctic under NATO's purview. President Donald Trump, however, claimed via Truth Social on Friday that the agreement grants the U.S. “permanent control over security, and all other needs, in Greenland,” and prohibits adversaries from establishing a military presence without Washington's approval. This announcement follows months of pressure from Trump, who had previously threatened to use military or economic force to acquire the semi-autonomous Danish territory, leading to a diplomatic crisis within NATO earlier in January.
The impending agreement has already triggered significant market reactions. Shares of U.S.-listed companies with exposure to Greenland surged on Monday, September 21, 2026. Greenland Energy saw its stock price increase by over 154% in premarket trading, while Greenland Mines climbed more than 70%, and Critical Metals Corp rose nearly 27%. These companies are involved in oil and gas exploration, and the mining of palladium, gold, platinum, and rare earths in Greenland. Trump also asserted that the deal would come at “no cost to the U.S.” and that Washington would “immediately begin the process of developing a large Military presence in the appropriate part of Greenland.”
What the Evidence Establishes
The evidence establishes that a trilateral security agreement involving Denmark, Greenland, and the United States is set for signing on Tuesday, September 23, 2026. This agreement is intended to expand NATO's role in Arctic security, moving beyond a purely bilateral Danish-American responsibility. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen confirmed this intent, stating that “it would be NATO that looks after the Arctic.” A NATO spokesperson welcomed the agreement on Saturday, affirming it would “help advance security, stability and cooperation in this vital region.” The deal is a direct outcome of sustained pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump, who has consistently articulated a strategic interest in Greenland.
Furthermore, the agreement explicitly aims to block U.S. adversaries from establishing military bases or a presence in Greenland without Washington's written approval. President Trump's public statements on Truth Social on Friday, September 18, 2026, indicate a U.S. intention to develop a
Where the Accounts Conflict
A primary conflict in the accounts centers on the nature and extent of U.S. control over Greenland's security. President Donald Trump stated on Truth Social that the agreement grants the United States “permanent control over security, and all other needs, in Greenland,” and that no U.S. adversary could have a base or military presence there without Washington’s written approval. This framing suggests an exclusive and comprehensive U.S. authority over the island's defense and other strategic aspects. Trump also claimed the U.S. would “FOREVER have the complete ability to do what is necessary in Greenland.”
Conversely, Danish and Greenlandic officials have emphasized shared responsibility and respect for sovereignty. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen indicated that the agreement would be structured such that “responsibility for security in the Arctic is not only Danish or American,” but largely involves NATO. Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen stated the agreement “recognizes Greenland’s interests and our place in the international cooperation,” and would “ensure and strengthen the security of Greenland, the Kingdom of Denmark, the United States and the Western Alliance.” While Denmark has acknowledged underinvestment in Greenland’s defense and pledged to expand its military presence, including more NATO troops, neither Denmark nor Greenland has directly commented on Trump’s specific claim of “permanent control,” instead focusing on the benefits to the island and respect for its self-determination. Erik Jensen, an opposition lawmaker in Greenland, after reading the draft, expressed reassurance and no worry, suggesting the deal aligns with Greenlandic interests.
Context and Stakes
The security agreement emerges from a period of heightened geopolitical interest in the Arctic, driven by climate change opening new shipping routes and access to vast natural resources, alongside increasing military activity from Russia and China. Greenland, the world's largest island, holds immense strategic importance due to its geographical position between North America and Europe, making it a critical location for missile defense and early warning systems. Its vast, largely untapped reserves of rare earth minerals, oil, and gas further amplify its economic and strategic value, attracting global attention from powers seeking to secure critical supply chains.
The deal also directly addresses the diplomatic tensions that arose from President Trump's previous attempts to purchase Greenland in 2019 and his subsequent threats to annex the territory. These actions triggered a diplomatic crisis within NATO, straining relations between Washington and Copenhagen. The current agreement represents an effort to defuse that pressure by accommodating U.S. security interests within a framework that Denmark and Greenland assert respects the island's sovereignty and self-determination. The stakes are high for all parties: for the U.S., it's about securing a vital strategic asset and countering rival influence; for Denmark, it's about maintaining sovereignty over its autonomous territory while strengthening its alliance ties; and for Greenland, it's about balancing economic development and security needs with its aspirations for greater autonomy and international recognition.
What to Watch Next
Following the scheduled signing of the agreement on Tuesday, September 23, 2026, the immediate focus will be on the public release of the deal's full text. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen declined to discuss the contents, indicating that key details, such as whether the deal amends the 1951 defense agreement that forms the legal basis for the U.S. presence in Greenland, remain undisclosed. The specific language regarding U.S. control versus shared NATO responsibility will be scrutinized to reconcile the conflicting public statements from President Trump and Danish/Greenlandic officials. Any discrepancies or ambiguities in the official text could lead to further diplomatic clarifications or public debate.
Beyond the text, observers will monitor concrete actions related to military development. President Trump stated the U.S. would “immediately begin the process of developing a large Military presence” in Greenland. This implies forthcoming announcements from the U.S. Department of Defense regarding specific infrastructure projects, troop deployments, or budget allocations for Greenland. The nature and scale of these developments will indicate the practical implementation of the agreement. Furthermore, the activities of U.S.-listed companies like Greenland Energy, Greenland Mines, and Critical Metals Corp will be closely watched. Any acceleration in their exploration or mining projects, particularly given Greenland Energy's recent delay due to a
Bottom Line
The impending security agreement between Denmark, Greenland, and the United States marks a significant shift in Arctic geopolitics, formally integrating NATO into the region's defense architecture. While the deal aims to accommodate U.S. strategic interests and counter potential adversaries, a clear divergence exists between President Trump's assertion of “permanent control” and the Danish and Greenlandic emphasis on shared responsibility and respect for sovereignty. The agreement is a direct response to sustained U.S. pressure and seeks to stabilize a diplomatically sensitive situation.
The financial markets have reacted positively, with U.S.-listed companies with Greenlandic interests experiencing substantial stock surges, reflecting expectations of increased economic activity and resource development on the island. The full implications of the deal, particularly regarding the balance of power and the extent of U.S. influence, will become clearer upon the public release of the agreement's text and subsequent military and economic actions. The long-term impact will depend on how the stated commitments translate into tangible developments on the ground and how the various stakeholders navigate the delicate balance between national security, economic opportunity, and sovereign rights in the strategically vital Arctic region.
