Democrats Win Control of Congress in Midterm ElectionsDeep Dive

What Happened

On November 4, 2026, the Democratic Party swept both the House and Senate, riding a blue wave spurred by widespread voter discontent. The party now holds a 54-seat majority in the Senate and 228 seats in the House. This midterm election saw significant gains for gun-control supporters in red states, with Democrats flipping seats in states President Donald Trump carried in 2024.

Among the new gun-control candidates elected are Democratic Texas Sen.-elect James Talarico, South Carolina Sen.-elect Annie Andrews, and Ohio Sen.-elect Sherrod Brown. These victories were supported by donations from billionaire and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who donated at least $36 million to Everytown for Gun Safety.

What the Evidence Establishes

The evidence from the midterm elections establishes that Democrats made significant gains in red states, with gun-control supporters playing a crucial role in the party's success. The Fox News Voter Poll surveyed over 100,000 registered voters nationwide and found that suburban and urban voters, women, and Hispanics sided with Democrats, while rural voters, men, and voters without a college degree favored Republicans.

The poll also found that voters were motivated by concerns about the economy, government corruption, and the cost of living. The Democratic Party's advantage on issues like healthcare and transgender policies helped to drive their success in the midterm elections.

Where the Accounts Conflict

There are conflicting accounts about the implications of the midterm election results. Some outlets, such as Fox News, have framed the results as a rejection of President Trump's policies and a desire for change. Others, such as Breitbart, have emphasized the need for Republicans to return to principled conservative values in order to regain support.

Additionally, there are disagreements about the role of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the election. Some Democrats, such as Rep. Ro Khanna, have celebrated the return of DEI, while others, such as Republicans, have questioned its importance and argued that it is a distraction from more pressing issues.

Context and Stakes

The midterm election results have significant implications for the country, with the Democratic Party now in control of both the House and Senate. This shift in power could lead to efforts to impose higher taxes on certain items, such as suppressors and short-barreled rifles, and could also impact the future of gun control legislation.

The elections also highlight the ongoing divisions within the country, with suburban and urban voters, women, and Hispanics siding with Democrats, while rural voters, men, and voters without a college degree favored Republicans. These divisions will likely continue to play a role in future elections and policy decisions.

What to Watch Next

As the Democratic Party takes control of both the House and Senate, there are several key issues to watch in the coming months. One major issue will be the party's efforts to impose higher taxes on certain items, such as suppressors and short-barreled rifles. Additionally, the future of gun control legislation will be a key area of focus, with Democrats likely to push for stricter regulations.

Another important issue will be the ongoing divisions within the country, with suburban and urban voters, women, and Hispanics siding with Democrats, while rural voters, men, and voters without a college degree favored Republicans.
