What Happened
On October 12, 2026, Judge Ana Reyes, a Biden appointee, admonished Trump administration lawyers for cutting down hundreds of trees at East Potomac Park without providing sufficient notice. The tree removal is part of a larger plan to renovate the East Potomac Golf Links, a historic public golf course in Washington D.C.
According to journalist Scott MacFarlane, who live-tweeted from the hearing, Judge Reyes was visibly upset, screaming at the government attorneys and stating that they had 'lost all credibility.' The judge questioned the timing of the tree removal, which began on Saturday, October 11, 2026, after the government provided late notice on Friday, October 10, 2026.
The Trump administration maintains that the tree removal is part of a 2019 National Park Service landscape-restoration plan, which predates Trump's proposal to redesign the golf course. However, preservationists and progressive interests argue that the administration has not satisfied applicable environmental and historic-preservation requirements.
What the Evidence Establishes
The evidence establishes that Judge Ana Reyes has a history of clashing with the Trump administration, having previously grilled a Trump administration attorney about his religious beliefs during litigation challenging Trump's restrictions on transgender military service. Reyes has also ruled that Trump violated federal notice requirements when he fired several inspectors general.
The tree removal at East Potomac Park is part of a larger controversy surrounding the Trump administration's plans to renovate the golf course. The administration has proposed a redesign of the course, which would include the construction of new 'world championship' courses designed by legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus.
According to the Washington Post, Judge Reyes has been a vocal critic of the Trump administration, having previously called Trump's order restricting transgender military service 'biologically inaccurate.' The judge has also been the subject of a formal misconduct complaint from the Trump administration, which alleged bias in her rulings.
Where the Accounts Conflict
The accounts of the tree removal at East Potomac Park conflict over the timing and notice provided by the government. The Trump administration maintains that the tree removal is part of a 2019 National Park Service landscape-restoration plan, which predates Trump's proposal to redesign the golf course.
However, Judge Ana Reyes and preservationists argue that the administration did not provide sufficient notice before cutting down the trees. The judge stated that she was 'beyond disappointed' with the government's conduct and that they had 'lost all credibility.' The administration's lawyers acknowledged that they had learned of the tree removal operation on October 8 or 9, 2026, but did not notify the court until the end of the workweek.
The conflict over the tree removal is part of a larger debate over the Trump administration's plans to renovate the East Potomac Golf Links. Preservationists and progressive interests argue that the administration has not satisfied applicable environmental and historic-preservation requirements, while the administration maintains that the renovation is necessary to improve the course and benefit the community.
Context and Stakes
The controversy over the tree removal at East Potomac Park is part of a larger context of clashes between the Trump administration and preservationists over the renovation of the golf course. The course is located on an island connected to the city proper by the Jefferson Memorial and Francis Case Bridge, and is a popular destination for golfers and tourists.
The stakes of the controversy are high, with preservationists arguing that the administration's plans to renovate the course could harm the environment and historic preservation of the area. The administration, on the other hand, maintains that the renovation is necessary to improve the course and benefit the community.
According to Norm Eisen, a former Obama ethics lawyer, the controversy is part of a 'broad legal resistance' to the Trump administration's plans. Eisen's group, Democracy Defenders Fund, has been involved in several lawsuits challenging the administration's actions, including the tree removal at East Potomac Park.
What to Watch Next
The next steps in the controversy over the tree removal at East Potomac Park will depend on the outcome of the court case. Judge Ana Reyes has agreed to hear the case in an 'emergency' setting, and preservationists are seeking to halt the administration's plans to renovate the golf course.
The administration will likely continue to defend its actions, arguing that the tree removal is part of a necessary landscape-restoration plan. However, preservationists and progressive interests will likely continue to challenge the administration's plans, arguing that they have not satisfied applicable environmental and historic-preservation requirements.
According to journalist Scott MacFarlane, the case could have significant implications for the Trump administration's plans to renovate other public spaces. MacFarlane tweeted that the case could set a precedent for future challenges to the administration's actions, and that the outcome could have far-reaching consequences for the environment and historic preservation.
Bottom Line
The controversy over the tree removal at East Potomac Park is a microcosm of the larger clashes between the Trump administration and preservationists over the renovation of public spaces. The case highlights the tensions between the administration's plans to improve public facilities and the need to protect the environment and historic preservation.
Ultimately, the outcome of the case will depend on the court's decision, which will likely be influenced by the evidence presented and the arguments made by both sides. However, regardless of the outcome, the controversy over the tree removal at East Potomac Park will likely have significant implications for the Trump administration's plans to renovate other public spaces, and will continue to be a source of tension between the administration and preservationists.
As Judge Ana Reyes stated, the administration's actions have led to a loss of credibility, and it remains to be seen how the administration will respond to the court's decision. One thing is certain, however: the controversy over the tree removal at East Potomac Park will continue to be a major story in the coming days and weeks.
