What Happened
On Sunday, October 18, 2026, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent issued a public warning to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, advising him to be "careful" with what Bessent termed "reckless" comments suggesting the United States had slowed down Starlink satellite internet services. Bessent's remarks, reported by The Hill - News, directly countered Zelensky's implied accusations. Separately, on Friday, October 16, 2026, former President Donald Trump repeated a controversial joke involving the name "Mohammed" at a campaign rally in Dalton Municipal Airport, Georgia, according to Reuters. This marked the second instance in two weeks where Trump used the name in a public address, following a similar incident nine days prior targeting Michigan's Democratic Senate nominee, Abdul El-Sayed.
During the Georgia rally, Trump stated, "You know, I took a lot of heat for calling him Mohammed. I don’t care. I’m the president of the United States. I can call you whatever the hell I want. I can call you whatever I want, Mohammed." This statement, captured in a post on X, was a direct reference to his earlier remarks about El-Sayed. The initial incident involved Trump calling El-Sayed "Mohammed El-Sayed" and labeling him a "RADICAL Extremist, Terrorist Sympathizer" linked to "the days of the Jihad" on Truth Social. El-Sayed, a Muslim former health official born in Michigan to Egyptian immigrant parents, responded on X, asserting, "He knows my name is Abdul. He says it everyday."
What the Evidence Establishes
The evidence establishes that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent explicitly warned Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky regarding his comments about the U.S. slowing Starlink. Bessent stated, as reported by The Hill - News on October 18, 2026, that "President Trump and Secretary [of State Marco] Rubio have categorically said that no one in the Trump administration did that." Bessent characterized Zelensky's comments as "very reckless." This directly refutes any suggestion of U.S. interference with Starlink services under the current administration.
Regarding former President Trump's actions, Reuters reported on October 17, 2026, that Trump used the name "Mohammed" in a joke at a Georgia campaign rally. This followed an earlier instance nine days prior where he referred to Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed as "Mohammed El-Sayed" and posted on Truth Social calling him a "RADICAL Extremist, Terrorist Sympathizer." El-Sayed, whose first name is Abdulrahman, publicly responded on X, stating, "He knows my name is Abdul. He says it everyday." Fox News confirmed El-Sayed's background as a Muslim former health official born in Michigan to Egyptian immigrant parents. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, according to The Hill, described Trump's language as bigoted. El-Sayed is currently trailing Republican Mike Rogers, who has Trump's endorsement, in advertising money by nearly two-to-one ahead of their second debate on October 21.
Where the Accounts Conflict
While there is no direct factual conflict regarding the events themselves, the accounts diverge significantly in their interpretation and framing of former President Trump's repeated use of the name "Mohammed." Trump, speaking at the Georgia rally, defended his actions by stating, "I don’t care. I’m the president of the United States. I can call you whatever the hell I want." This statement, reported by Reuters, frames his actions as an exercise of presidential prerogative and dismisses criticism.
Conversely, Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, the target of Trump's initial remarks, presented a conflicting interpretation of Trump's intent and impact. El-Sayed asserted on X, "He knows my name is Abdul. He says it everyday. But he’s not just attacking me. He’s attacking all of us." El-Sayed further claimed Trump "thinks he can use my name and my faith to distract us from the suffering his policies are inflicting on us." This directly contradicts Trump's implied defense of his comments as harmless or within his rights. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, as reported by The Hill, also offered a conflicting assessment, labeling Trump's language as "bigoted," indicating a perception of malicious intent and discriminatory impact, which stands in opposition to Trump's own framing.
Context and Stakes
Treasury Secretary Bessent's warning to President Zelensky regarding Starlink comments carries significant geopolitical weight. Starlink, operated by SpaceX, has been a critical communication tool for Ukraine during its conflict, and any perceived U.S. interference or slowdown could strain relations between Washington and Kyiv. The Trump administration's categorical denial, as stated by Bessent, underscores the sensitivity of such claims and the potential for them to undermine trust and cooperation. The stakes involve not only the immediate military and humanitarian situation in Ukraine but also the broader perception of U.S. reliability as an ally and technological partner.
Former President Trump's repeated "Mohammed" jokes are situated within the high-stakes environment of the 2026 midterm elections, particularly the Michigan Senate race. His comments, which Muslim advocacy groups have linked to rising anti-Muslim sentiment, according to Reuters, could energize both his base and opposition voters. The Michigan Senate contest between Abdul El-Sayed and Republican Mike Rogers, who is endorsed by Trump, is already contentious. El-Sayed's response, framing Trump's remarks as an attack on his faith and community, aims to rally support against what he perceives as divisive rhetoric. The financial disparity in advertising money, with El-Sayed trailing Rogers, adds another layer of challenge for the Democratic candidate, making every public statement, particularly from a figure like Trump, a critical factor in shaping voter perception and turnout.
What to Watch Next
The immediate focus will be on the second Michigan Senate debate between Abdul El-Sayed and Mike Rogers, scheduled for October 21. This debate will provide a direct platform for El-Sayed to address Trump's comments further and for Rogers to potentially distance himself or align with the former president's rhetoric. Observers will be watching for any shifts in El-Sayed's campaign strategy or messaging in response to the perceived attacks on his faith and name. The debate's outcome and subsequent media coverage could significantly influence voter sentiment in the final weeks before the election, especially given El-Sayed's current advertising deficit.
In the broader geopolitical sphere, attention will turn to any potential follow-up statements from President Zelensky or Ukrainian officials regarding the Starlink issue. Treasury Secretary Bessent's firm warning suggests the U.S. administration is keen to prevent any narrative that implies a lack of support or direct interference. Any clarification or retraction from Kyiv, or conversely, a doubling down on the claims, would indicate the trajectory of U.S.-Ukraine diplomatic relations concerning critical technological aid. Furthermore, the impact of Trump's rhetoric on Muslim advocacy groups and their potential organized responses or voter mobilization efforts will be a key development to monitor in the coming days and weeks.
Bottom Line
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent publicly cautioned Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky against making "reckless" claims that the U.S. slowed Starlink services, directly refuting such allegations and emphasizing the Trump administration's denial. This intervention highlights the sensitivity of U.S.-Ukraine relations concerning critical aid and information. Concurrently, former President Donald Trump reiterated a controversial "Mohammed" joke at a Georgia rally, defending his right to use such language, which has drawn strong condemnation from Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. These remarks are intensifying the contentious Michigan Senate race, where El-Sayed faces Republican Mike Rogers, and are likely to further polarize public discourse on identity and political campaigning. The upcoming Michigan debate on October 21 will be a critical juncture for the candidates to address these issues directly, potentially shaping the final weeks of the campaign.
