What Happened
On October 10, 2026, Apple filed with the European Commission under the Digital Markets Act transparency list, stating it has secured the right to make employment offers to “certain employees of Huxe AI” and to obtain a non‑exclusive license to Huxe’s intellectual property.
The filing, submitted on June 9, 2026, comes shortly after Huxe announced on May 21, 2026 that it would shut down, remove its apps from the Apple and Google stores, halt service and delete user data, with the shutdown completed on May 28, 2026.
Huxe was founded by Raiza Martin after she left Google’s NotebookLM (now Gemini Notebook) team in December 2024, together with designer Jason Spielman and engineer Stephen Hughes, and had raised $4.6 million in a public funding round opened in September 2025 following an invite‑only launch in June 2025.
The European Commission filing did not disclose a financial price or the exact number of employees involved, and Apple has not publicly confirmed whether any Huxe staff have accepted offers.
What the Evidence Establishes
The Huxe shutdown announcement quoted the team as saying, “The team is moving on to new things, and we won’t be continuing development of the product,” and thanked users with, “The fact that you used it, told friends about it, sent us your suggestions and your ideas, made it feel like we built it together.”
FTC Chair Andrew Ferguson stated in January 2026 that the agency would examine acqui‑hire arrangements more closely, and the FTC and DOJ sought public comment on new premerger reporting rules in March 2026, with the proposed rules potentially covering acqui‑hires, reverse acqui‑hires and non‑exclusive IP licenses.
Sources note that this transaction is at least the fourth AI‑related deal Apple has disclosed in 2026, following a January purchase of Israeli startup Q.ai for close to $2 billion and a May talent and licensing agreement with avatar startup Animato.
TechCrunch characterized the structure as a reverse acqui‑hire, a method for larger companies to hire key team members and license technology without acquiring the startup outright, thereby reducing antitrust scrutiny.
Where the Accounts Conflict
While the European Commission filing uses the phrase “reverse acqui‑hire,” some outlets refer to the same arrangement simply as an “acqui‑hire,” creating a semantic disagreement over terminology.
The filing does not reveal the financial terms of the deal, leaving open whether Apple paid any upfront consideration, whereas prior Apple AI deals such as the Q.ai purchase involved a disclosed price near $2 billion.
It remains uncertain which specific Huxe employees will join Apple, whether they have accepted offers, and how the licensed technology will be deployed—whether as a standalone feature, integrated into Podcasts, or incorporated into Siri.
Speculation that Apple aims to add AI‑powered podcast generation to its Podcasts app follows Spotify’s May 2026 launch of similar features, but Apple has not confirmed any such plan.
Context and Stakes
The deal occurs amid heightened antitrust scrutiny of large tech firms under the EU’s Digital Markets Act, which requires transparency for acquisitions and licensing arrangements that could affect market competition.
Apple’s move to acquire AI talent and non‑exclusive IP without a full purchase mirrors a broader industry pattern where firms seek to bolster AI capabilities while avoiding regulatory triggers associated with traditional mergers.
In the audio space, Spotify’s recent rollout of AI‑driven podcast generation raises competitive pressure on Apple to enhance its Podcasts app, especially as Google’s Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM) continues to evolve as an AI‑assisted content tool.
Should the FTC pursue stricter premerger reporting rules that capture acqui‑hires, future similar transactions may face additional disclosure requirements and potential delays.
What to Watch Next
Watch for any official Apple press release or SEC filing announcing the hiring of specific Huxe engineers or designers, which would confirm the personnel transfer aspect of the deal.
Monitor upcoming beta releases of Apple Podcasts or Siri for features that resemble Huxe’s personalized audio briefings, indicating integration of the licensed technology.
Track the outcome of the FTC and DOJ review of acqui‑hire reporting rules; a final rule could impose new notification obligations on transactions like this one.
Observe whether Apple references the Huxe technology in any future earnings call or product launch, signaling a strategic shift toward AI‑generated audio content.
Bottom Line
Apple has secured the right to hire Huxe AI staff and obtain a non‑exclusive license to its podcast‑focused intellectual property through a reverse acqui‑hire structure disclosed via a European Commission filing on June 9, 2026.
The transaction adds to Apple’s series of 2026 AI‑related deals, following the Q.ai purchase and the Animato agreement, while avoiding the price disclosure and full acquisition typical of traditional purchases.
Although the financial terms and specific employee movements remain undisclosed, the deal reflects Apple’s strategy to bolster AI audio capabilities amid rising competition from Spotify and regulatory pressure under the Digital Markets Act.
